After several months of trying to round up quotes, contractors, and idea work expanding my master bath started today. That is the good news. The bad news is apparently I need to find a bathtub like... today.

99% sure we’re going with a freestanding soaking tub because of space constraints. Now comes the choice between cheap Chinese crap, American branded cheap Chinese crap, or American branded but it would be cheaper to make a tub out of actual money.

Right now I’m evaluating based on cost, weight, and warranty length. Weight, annoyingly, is the quality that probably matters the most and also is the one that most seller don’t provide. On the few I do have weights, they vary more than I’d expect.

Right now I am leaning towards going based on brand. Woodbrid ge gets good reviews on Amazon. Jacuzzi certainly has name recognition, but that seems to cost a premium. American Standard seems to be a good balance between the two. Wyndham is also under consideration due to their prevalence.  

What does Oppo think?

I’m in this same conundrum.  I need to choose a freestanding tub for our master bath. I can either go with cheap tubs made who-knows-where of questionable quality, or pay $2k for an American made tub with no question marks.  And since it’s freestanding, you have to live with your choice due to plumbing placement.  I’m leaning towards the $2k hole in my pocket.  I’ve already spent $75k on this addition, why not another couple grand?

It’s supposed to hold many gallons of water and various bodies on occasion over the period of many years. I can’t recommend a specific brand, but I will say that I would just overpay for something with higher quality/better warranty.

You’re not wrong, though I’d bet we never use it.

My big problem with these is I’ve never touched one IRL and thought “ yes, that feels like a quality product.”  They’re all kinda squishy and cheap feeling, even at $2k+.

I was here too. I thought about it and the brand. The brand I went was more quality than the cheaper stuff and should last until my next update 25years from now. The marginal difference of $500 ($20/per year over 25yrs) was just not worth it to me; vs how much it potentially costs to fix water damage.

Anything water/electric related I go quality.

Why the concern over weight? Once it’s installed you’ll presumably add 20-30 gallons of water at 8 pounds per gallon, plus a person at another 150-200 ish pounds for roughly 1,000,000 pounds if my math is right. Or maybe closer to 300-440 pounds depending.

My bathtub is probably a hundred years old so I’m struggling to wrap my brain around the idea of a warranty for a tub.

But... I think you should try all of them out and pick the most comfortable one. I mean if they let you lay on mattresses in the store, surely you can sit in bathtubs? Because it’s the absolute worst when the tub is just slightly  too short to comfortably fit your legs.

I’ve never bought a tub, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to go cheap. As with most things I’d probably shoot for the upper middle of the price range . I do know that I will absolutely never go with an old cast iron claw foot like the ones everybody oohs and ahhs over. One of my sisters had one and never used it because the cast iron would suck the heat out of the water so she would have to add even more hot water. It was a huge waste of water and energy.

I have a builder who does some nice work and has a free-standing tub in every home... Next time I’m at one of their projects, I can tell you what brand they use. I’ll even step inside to see if it flexes at all.

You misunderstand, the heavier tub is the better tub!  If the tubs are the same size and one weighs 25 - 50 pounds more, one can reasonably assume the heavier one is better.

Is a tub something where you need the utmost quality? I ask only because I’ve never heard of any real issues with one. Clogged drains, sure, but beyond that... I’d just go with the cheapest one that looks good. Save the money for a voice-activated wine fridge that raises out of the floor NEXT to the tub.

Make your own out of concrete. You can make it as heavy as you want!

As for the “squishyness” of tubs in another reply you’ve got, a lot of tubs aren’t very rigid until they’re framed in place.  If you’re looking at a display model in a store it will seem flimsy since it’s not properly part of a structure.
